Block Those Ad's

There is a great debate over which browsers to use on the Mac, I get the question about 10 times a week. Which browser should I use and why?

There are Pro's and Con's to all of the browsers out there, but the one thing I do like about the Firefox browser, is that the application is an open-sourced application. Meaning this permits users to use, change, and improve the software, or redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.

This is a mixed bag in the ways that software developers can enhance and also diminish the quality of a product.

In Firefox's world, the software has a complete section dedicated to Add-Ons, these little bundle's of code, are a great way to alter your browser's feel and function without compromising or altering the softwares source coding.

I am however going to talk a bit about one of my favourite Add-Ons, and it is called Adblock Plus.

What is Adblock Plus?

Adblock Plus is an Add-On for Firefox, with the primary goal of removing advertisements. For that, it will look at all requests made by web pages and block the request if the address the request should go to matches a filter in Adblock Plus. Out of the box, Adblock Plus will offer a filter subscription which is based on users from the United States — this is a list of filters maintained by other users and will be updated automatically regularly. This ensures that your AdBlocking is up to date and active.

Now the nice thing about Adblock Plus and the Add-On feature of Firefox, is at any time you can uninstall the Add-On and continue using Firefox sans the Add-On, such functionality deserves to be recognized, and for the longest time I had my blinders on to what Firefox can truly help you accomplish.

I could go on forever explaining all of the different types of Add-Ons Firefox has to offer, but go here to check them out for yourself.
